The Registration Journey

Step 1: Register at Municipality (BSN) ▼

What is a BSN? Your Burgerservicenummer (BSN) is a unique citizen service number needed for everything from banking to healthcare.

How to get it:

  • Book an appointment at your local municipality (gemeente) online
  • Bring: valid passport/ID, birth certificate, proof of address (rental contract)
  • Processing time: You'll receive your BSN immediately, full registration takes 1-2 weeks

Important: Do this within 5 days of arrival in the Netherlands.

Step 2: Open a Bank Account ▼

Step 5: Register for Dutch Tax (DigiD) ▼

DigiD is your digital identity for accessing government services online (taxes, benefits, official documents).

How to get it:

  • Apply online at digid.nl after receiving your BSN
  • Activation code arrives by mail in 5-10 days
  • Activate online with the code
